In 1996 Robin Hanson proposed Markets for Dumping CEOs, that a company should run two prediction markets: the share price if the CEO stays, and if the board fires them. If the dump price sits enough above the keep price, the board should fire the CEO. (In 2008 he said it is the experiment he would spend a million dollars on, which he reaffirmed in 2020.)
The market value of public company CEOs really is extremely important to know. The problem is that valuing them doesn't actually work with prediction markets. As Dynomight puts it in Futarchy's fundamental flaw, conditional prediction markets "reveal probabilistic relationships, not causal relationships." A market on the share price in the worlds where a CEO gets fired is mostly telling you about the crisis that got them fired. You can isolate the causal question by conditioning on the board firing them now. But then you have a liquidity problem, as traders aren't motivated to trade conditions that won't happen 99% of the time, since the markets will get canceled and nobody gets paid.
We have prediction market level accuracy with AI forecasting now, and using FutureSearch sidesteps all the incentive problems. Even better, since AI will tirelessly work on scenarios of any likelihood, we can forecast the impact of a deeper bench of replacement CEOs.
So here are the Fire the CEO forecasts, with selected replacement CEOs on ten companies:

+3.4%Larry Culp outside hireChairman and CEO, GE Aerospace−20% to +27%+$51B
Why they fit. Executed the historic three-way split of General Electric into focused entities CEO turnover is near record highs, and more experienced .... His peerless record in structural separation and capital discipline could address Reality Labs' $15B+ annual losses through industrial-grade financial rigor or a strategic spin-off
Why they are available. Having completed the GE split by 2024/2026, his legacy there is secure; he could be open to a final monumental turnaround challenge as of August 2026
Why it might not work. Has no background in consumer technology, social media, or AI infrastructure; his strict 'Lean' methodologies might clash heavily with Zuckerberg's expansive metaverse vision
+1.8%Adam Selipsky outside hireCEO and Co-founder, Helix Digital Infrastructure−17% to +21%+$27B
Why they fit. As the former CEO of AWS who scaled the cloud business to a $100B revenue run-rate, Selipsky possesses the operational depth to ensure Meta's $40B+ annual AI infrastructure spend generates efficient returns. His technical expertise perfectly matches Meta's capital expenditure mandate
Why they are available. Recently launched a $10B venture, Helix Digital Infrastructure, in June 2026 Former AWS CEO Adam Selipsky to lead new $10B AI data center venture; might be lured away by the unprecedented scale of Meta's platform
Why it might not work. Might refuse to leave a newly launched $10B venture (Helix) so soon after its June 2026 launch; Zuckerberg's 61% voting control might deter an executive used to full autonomy

Bill Ready | Pinterest Newsroom. He is highly relevant to Meta's mandate to defend and revitalize its core advertising growth engine
Why they are available. Has been at Pinterest since June 2022; leading a $1.5T company would be a major step up, making him highly gettable as of August 2026 Pinterest Statistics 2026: Users, Engagement & Marketing
Why it might not work. The board might perceive him as purely an ads/consumer operator lacking the deep silicon and infrastructure background needed to manage Meta's massive data center buildout
−4.9%Dina Powell McCormick internalPresident and vice chairman since January 2026−24% to +10%−$74B
—Bret Taylor not pricedCEO, Sierra
Why they fit. Former Meta CTO who navigated the 2023 OpenAI governance crisis and led the $27.7B acquisition of Slack at Salesforce Bret Taylor. He brings the technical and strategic depth needed to monetize AI infrastructure and serves as a peer-level product visionary trusted by Zuckerberg
Why they are available. Sierra is valued at $15.8B as of May 2026, making him highly entrenched as a founder, but Meta's CEO role is one of the few opportunities that could attract him given his history
Why it might not work. Extremely expensive to acquire or poach from Sierra; might prefer the autonomy of being a founder over operating under Zuckerberg's absolute control as a 'co-pilot'
—Shantanu Narayen not pricedBoard Chair, Adobe
Why they fit. Successfully pivoted Adobe to a SaaS and AI-driven powerhouse over 18 years. His experience repositioning a massive legacy portfolio toward high-growth AI directly maps to Meta's transition from social media to an AI-first interest graph
Why they are available. Announced his decision to transition from the CEO role at Adobe on March 12, 2026, remaining as Board Chair
Why it might not work. At the later stages of his career, he may prefer board roles over taking on another grueling operational CEO mandate at a highly scrutinized $1.5T company
—Ruth Porat not pricedPresident and Chief Investment Officer, Alphabet and Google
Why they fit. Imposed strict financial discipline on Alphabet's moonshot projects and managed intense global regulatory scrutiny. Provides the regulatory 'Adult Supervision' and capital discipline needed to rein in Meta's Reality Labs losses alongside Dina Powell McCormick
Why they are available. Entrenched at Alphabet, but the opportunity to step up to the CEO role at a primary rival could be a compelling career capstone as of August 2026
Why it might not work. Likely blocked by intense non-competes from Google; her strict financial discipline might conflict with Zuckerberg's willingness to sustain heavy long-term losses in Reality Labs
—Fidji Simo ruled outAdvisor, OpenAI
Why they were ruled out. Unavailable for a high-intensity CEO role due to recent health/medical leave (POTS) in July 2026 Fidji Simo; focus is also heavily on the application layer rather than massive infrastructure

Why they were ruled out. Tenure at Bumble lasted only one year before moving to a smaller-scale role; suggests she is not yet ready for a $1.5T enterprise scale and complex regulatory mandate
—Laxman Narasimhan ruled outFormer CEO, Starbucks
Why they were ruled out. Tenure marked by an inability to stabilize a core product and manage labor/regulatory challenges; failed operational pivots at Starbucks make him unsuitable for Meta's high-stakes AI mandate

Read the forecaster’s full reasoning for Meta
Situation & The Governance Constraint Meta's core business remains highly profitable, but the market is heavily discounting the stock due to the massive AI infrastructure and Reality Labs cash drain. Q2 2026 free cash flow collapsed 91% to $784M against 2026 capex guidance of $130–145B Meta's stock plunges light revenue guidance, dwindling ... Meta cash flow craters as Zuckerberg doubles down on AI .... The defining feature of any leadership handover is that Mark Zuckerberg retains 61% voting control and the chairmanship in every scenario meta-20260416. This structural reality bounds the price impact in both directions. A new CEO cannot force a capex reset, a Reality Labs shutdown, or a strategic spin-off over his objection, which severely discounts the "discipline premium" markets might otherwise apply. Conversely, strategic continuity limits downside risk because the AI roadmap stays with Zuckerberg. The net price difference therefore isolates what a hired executive can actually change in 12 months, minus transition friction, AI-researcher attrition, and the credibility discount of a two-headed governance structure.
The Downside Cases: McCormick & Ready Appointing an executive who does not directly solve the capital allocation problem incurs the costs of transition without the re-rating benefits. Dina Powell McCormick is the most negative branch (median -$29). Her mandate as President since January 2026 is financing the buildout, not rationing it Dina Powell McCormick Joins Meta as President and Vice .... Lacking a P&L, engineering, or AI track record, she would face a severe legitimacy deficit with the internal engineering bench, creating the highest risk of senior talent departures while being perceived by the market merely as Zuckerberg's proxy. Bill Ready (median -$15) presents a different mismatch. While his background at Pinterest, Google, and PayPal maps perfectly to Meta's ad monetization, the market's core concern is not advertising demand—it is the $130B+ capital program, an order of magnitude larger than anything he has managed. He offers little credibility on the binding constraint of infrastructure spending.
The Neutral Expectation: Generic Veteran A generic veteran technology public-company CEO prices the expectation over a standard search (median -$2). This averages out mostly current or former large-cap software, cloud, and consumer-internet leaders. While bringing credible P&L discipline and investor-relations competence, the pool average lacks founder-grade product conviction and would still be heavily discounted by the market as operating on Zuckerberg's leash. The flat-to-mildly-negative expectation reflects the friction of an executive transition and the ambiguity of who really sets AI direction under a controlling founder, which roughly offsets the benefits of standard professional management.
The Upside Channels: Selipsky & Culp The only candidates who generate positive value are those uniquely equipped to structurally address the compute and capex overhang. Adam Selipsky (median +$11) provides the most credible path to converting Meta's massive infrastructure build into a saleable, revenue-generating enterprise cloud—an "escape hatch" analysts have demanded but Zuckerberg has historically resisted Meta stock drops 10% as free cash flow gets crushed—and ... Meta Q2 2026: Ad Machine Strong, Capex Spooks the Street. His current role leading a >$10B AI data-center venture Former AWS CEO Adam Selipsky to lead new $10B AI data center venture makes him exceptionally qualified to impose capacity and procurement discipline. Larry Culp (median +$20) offers the highest upside and fattest right tail. As the archetype of capital discipline who executed the breakup of GE How GE CEO Larry Culp pulled off the turnaround of the century - Fortune, his appointment would be read as an explicit mandate to cap 2027 capex, apply strict hurdle rates, and ring-fence Reality Labs. Under the resolution convention, any sum-of-parts value from structural separations supports his right tail. However, Culp carries significant consumer-tech cultural mismatch risks and the highest probability of a damaging governance clash with the 61% voting chairman, keeping his median modest relative to his tail potential.

Why they are available. Currently CEO at Pinterest. With Pinterest valued at a fraction of Adobe's ~$102B market capitalization, this represents a significant platform step-up and compensation opportunity that he would likely entertain

Why they fit. Adobe's primary mandate is to transition Creative Cloud from defending against AI disruption to being a primary AI-monetization engine. Why they are available. Highly available. He stepped down from his executive role on August 6, 2026, to become a Special Advisor [stocktitan-crm-8k], making him an immediate candidate
Why it might not work. As a deeply technical engineering leader, he may lack the pure go-to-market and commercial monetization experience that the Adobe board expects in a standalone CEO

She is adept at turning AI disruption threats into high-margin monetization tools for legacy prosumer software
Why they are available. Extremely available. She stepped down from her EVP position at Intuit on May 31, 2026, to transition into an advisory role
Why it might not work. Her highest corporate rank has been EVP/GM; ascending directly to the CEO role of a massive $100B entity like Adobe might be viewed as too large a leap by search firm Heidrick & Struggles
—Sarah Friar not pricedChief Financial Officer, OpenAI
Why they fit. Friar provides the operational and financial rigor that Lead Independent Director Frank Calderoni values. She led the transformation of OpenAI's finance department to support an annualized revenue scale of over $20 billion by mid-2026, gaining direct exposure to cutting-edge AI monetization models
Why they are available. Currently CFO at OpenAI. Having previously served as CEO of Nextdoor, she may strongly desire a return to the chief executive seat, and Adobe offers a premier Fortune 500 platform
Why it might not work. She recently joined OpenAI, and a rapid departure could be difficult to execute or seen as a red flag. Adobe may also prefer a product-centric leader over a finance-centric one

Why they are available. Currently CEO of YouTube. The opportunity to become a fully independent public company CEO, out of the shadow of Alphabet's corporate structure, is a proven lure for high-level divisional executives
Why it might not work. He is highly entrenched at Alphabet; compensation to extract him would be immense, and Alphabet may enforce strict non-competes regarding creative AI tooling

The Baseline: Leadership Vacuum and Governance Overhang Adobe’s fundamentals remain sound—Q2 FY26 revenue was a record $6.62B, and AI-first ARR tripled year-over-year https://www.adobe.com/cc-shared/assets/investor-relations/pdfs/11606202/a5543arefgt.pdf—but the stock is heavily penalized by an AI-disruption thesis against Creative Cloud, trading at a compressed multiple Adobe (ADBE) Stock Price & Overview - Stock Analysis Adobe Inc Stock (ADBE) Moved Down by 3.02% on Aug 12 - TradingKey. Slow-rolling the succession search through August 2027 is substantively the worst governance branch. It locks in an 18-month public vacancy under a lame-duck CEO with an interim CFO, cementing a measurable "vacuum discount." Crucially, a stalled process elevates the risk that passed-over internal front-runners depart and leaves the business vulnerable to strategic drift while AI-native rivals press their advantage. Consequently, every appointment branch outperforms this baseline by immediately removing the uncertainty overhang.
The Internal Continuity Pick: David Wadhwani Appointing David Wadhwani is the lowest-integration-risk path and the market's modal expectation. He already runs the majority of Adobe's revenue and directly owns the Firefly and freemium pivot David Wadhwani Adobe eyes two internal leaders, AI outsiders for CEO role. His appointment guarantees the retention of the most critical operator and provides immediate credibility to a strategy that is defensible but currently unloved by the market. Because this choice represents continuity rather than rupture, its capacity to force a massive multiple re-rating is constrained, but it reliably accelerates the core roadmap without the friction of an external transition.
The Strategic Reset: A Generic Veteran External CEO Landing a veteran AI-era software public-company CEO carries the highest median and by far the widest variance. This profile matches the board's stated AI-monetization mandate and signals a willingness to execute the bold strategic moves—such as portfolio pruning or aggressive pricing resets—that analysts argue would be highly rewarded Adobe needs a new CEO to make bold AI moves, and its .... However, this branch introduces substantial integration friction into Adobe's distinct creative culture, guarantees the loss of top internal talent, and elevates the probability of a conservative "kitchen-sink" guidance reset in the first few quarters of FY27 Adobe eyes two internal leaders, AI outsiders for CEO role. It is the classic high-risk, high-reward intervention.
The Named External Candidates: Spataro, Ready, and Tallapragada The three named external candidates all resolve the governance overhang but trade at a discount to the generic veteran pool due to specific capability or fit compromises. Jared Spataro brings an exceptional AI-at-work narrative from Microsoft's Copilot The next measure of AI momentum is work transformed Adobe (ADBE) Stock Price, News & Analysis, but lacks public-company CEO and large P&L experience, inviting execution skepticism from sophisticated holders. Bill Ready is a sitting public-company CEO with commerce and ads scale Bill Ready - Pinterest - Investor Relations, but he lacks professional-creative software pedigree, and his recent public-market scorecard at Pinterest limits his ability to drive an immediate re-rating Pinterest shares fall on lukewarm sales guidance. Srini Tallapragada offers deep enterprise engineering and AI-agent credibility from Salesforce Srini Tallapragada - President & Chief Engineering and Customer ..., but he has never been a CEO, and his recent move into a special-adviser role Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) moves Srini Tallapragada to advisor role reads more as an availability-driven engineering hire than a visionary strategic coup.
Horizon Dynamics and the AI Narrative In all scenarios, the dollar differences by August 2027 are fundamentally shaped by the interaction between the governance resolution and Adobe's underlying financial trajectory. Roughly twelve months into a new CEO's tenure, the initial appointment narrative will be heavily subordinated to concrete ARR conversion data validating or refuting the AI-disruption thesis Earnings call transcript: Adobe beats Q2 2026 forecasts, ... Adobe Inc Stock (ADBE) Moved Down by 3.02% on Aug 12 - TradingKey. Update August 13, 2026: Set against a related succession forecast [fc:bb028bf6-62a4-4c07-90f6-ccd3c058a3b2], this estimate maintains its distributions, reflecting that Intuit's compressed multiple offers more room for an external hire to unlock upside through a narrative reset.
Situation and Causal Mechanisms Intuit's ~50% decline to ~$338 is a narrative and multiple-compression issue—fear that agentic AI commoditizes DIY tax and SMB accounting Goldman Sachs Downgrades Intuit as AI Tax Rivals ...—not an operational collapse. Fundamentals remain intact, with Q3 FY26 revenue up 10% Intuit Reports Strong Third-Quarter Results and Raises Full .... Because we are pricing the downstream consequences of an imposed intervention, every replacement branch shares the same macro environment, 2027 tax demand, and baseline AI trajectory. Two opposing forces drive the divergence between branches. Downward: acute transition friction. A CEO change weeks before the September Investor Day and just four months before the decisive 2027 tax season almost guarantees a kitchen-sink guidance rebase and creates execution risk during Intuit's most critical operational window. Upward: a narrative re-rating. At ~15.8x forward earnings, a leader who can convince the market that Intuit is an AI platform rather than a defensive incumbent can expand the multiple, where one turn of P/E equates to roughly $24 per share.
Internal vs. Generic External Promoting an unnamed internal executive produces the lowest median outcome (-$4.00). Intuit currently has no president or COO and no clear heir apparent https://www.intuit.com/company/executives/. An internal promotion incurs the disruption of a sudden transition but buys almost no narrative reset; the market is unlikely to re-rate the stock for an untested insider delivering the same strategy. Conversely, a generic veteran enterprise-software CEO provides a modest positive median (+$5.00). A credible outside operator brings a capital-allocation signal and operational discipline, though generic enterprise candidates often lack experience with consumer tax seasonality and SMB-accounting ecosystems, capping the upside.
The Named Candidates David Wadhwani is the strongest operational and narrative fit, driving the highest median (+$9.67). He runs Adobe's Creativity & Productivity business and has directly navigated the transition of a subscription franchise through the generative AI shock David Wadhwani - Leaders. He provides the clearest roadmap for re-underwriting a consumer/prosumer software asset. Sukhinder Singh Cassidy offers the deepest direct domain expertise as CEO of Xero, a core QuickBooks competitor Meet Xero's executive and regional leadership teams, but her median is largely flat (+$0.67). Xero's own stock has suffered from similar AI anxieties, meaning she has not definitively solved the exact narrative problem Intuit faces. Furthermore, cross-hiring a listed competitor's sitting CEO brings notice periods, trade-secret friction, and governance noise at the exact moment Intuit needs focused execution ahead of tax season.
The High-Variance AI Bet Aparna Chennapragada produces the most volatile distribution (median +$3.00, but the widest tails). As Microsoft's Chief Product Officer for AI experiences Aparna Chennapragada, her appointment would send the loudest possible signal that Intuit is aggressively pursuing AI agents, plausibly generating the largest immediate multiple expansion. However, by August 2027, that narrative pop must be validated by the execution of a seasonal, highly regulated consumer franchise. Chennapragada has no public-company CEO or large-scale P&L experience, meaning her branch carries both the highest upside if she successfully shifts Intuit's product paradigm, and severe downside risk if the 2027 tax season is botched due to scaling and operational inexperience.
Tail Risks Across all replacement branches, the wide tails (spanning roughly -$40 to -$60 on the downside and +$50 to +$70 on the upside) reflect genuine operational divergence by August 2027. The right tail is populated by scenarios where a new CEO lands a clean tax season, prunes the portfolio, and achieves a one-to-two turn multiple expansion as the market stops treating Intuit as an AI victim. The left tail is dominated by scenarios where transition friction manifests as a severely slashed FY27 guide, executive churn following a recent 17% workforce reduction, or a disastrous mishandling of the January-April tax season, which destroys far more value than a fresh narrative can create.

Why they are available. Has led AMD for 12 years (since 2014). With the Zen turnaround successfully completed as of 2026, Apple represents the only larger technical challenge in the hardware industry
Why it might not work. Highly entrenched as Chair and CEO of AMD; a compensation buyout would be massive. The board might also view her as too heavily focused on enterprise/data-center rather than consumer devices

≈ 0%Bret Taylor outside hireCo-founder and CEO of Sierra and Chairman of OpenAI−12% to +11%−$9.7B
Why they fit. Taylor uniquely addresses Apple's 'AI and Siri deficit' while possessing enterprise platform scaling experience. At Salesforce, he led the $27.7B acquisition of Slack and the Customer 360 platform Bret Taylor - Wikipedia. He recently scaled Sierra to a $15.8B valuation by May 2026 by focusing on enterprise AI agents, proving his ability to build AI-first ecosystems
Why they are available. While currently active as CEO of a highly valued mid-2026 startup, the role of Apple CEO and the chance to fix Siri is arguably the only position that could pull him away from his ventures
Why it might not work. As a serial founder, he may prefer startup agility over leading a $4.4T regulated consumer hardware behemoth with deep legacy constraints
−0.7%Cancel it, Tim Cook stays internalReversing the announced transition−7% to +5%−$29B
−2.2%Cristiano Amon outside hirePresident and CEO of Qualcomm−14% to +7%−$97B
Why they fit. Amon matches the Apple silicon and China supply chain mandates perfectly. Under his leadership, Qualcomm acquired Nuvia for $1.4B to challenge Apple Silicon [p1q2r3] and drove a massive supply chain shift to India and Vietnam, targeting 60% diversification by 2027 [m2n3o4]
Why they are available. In his fifth year as CEO (since June 2021). While he recently signed 2026 contract renewals, the opportunity to lead the pinnacle hardware ecosystem company could compel a move
Why it might not work. Recently signed 2026 contract renewals at Qualcomm [x1y2z3] makes him extremely expensive. Moving a direct rival's CEO to Apple would also trigger bitter legal and non-compete transitions

—Nikesh Arora not pricedChairman and CEO of Palo Alto Networks
Why they fit. Arora addresses the services revenue plateau and App Store regulatory pressures. Nikesh
Why they are available. In his 8th year as PANW CEO; highly compensated but widely considered gettable for mega-cap tech roles due to his history of aggressive value creation and global operational background
Why it might not work. Lacks direct consumer hardware and silicon architecture experience; his high compensation at PANW makes him one of the most expensive executives to poach
—Panos Panay not pricedSenior Vice President of Devices & Services at Amazon
Why they fit. Panay is a product-first leader who maps directly to the hardware roadmap and Siri overhaul. He built Microsoft's Surface line Former Microsoft lead Panos Panay joins Amazon and led the 2026 launch of Amazon's 'Alexa+', which drove a 50% increase in smart home engagement through better AI personalization [h1i2j3]
Why they are available. Joined Amazon in late 2023. As a premium product visionary, he would likely view the Apple CEO role as the absolute pinnacle of his consumer hardware career
Why it might not work. Lacks the silicon architecture depth and massive global supply chain CEO record of other candidates. Apple's board typically prefers institutional scale operators for the top job
—Sarah Friar not pricedCFO of OpenAI
Why they fit. Friar addresses the Services growth mandate and the AI deficit. At Square, she scaled revenue from $850M to over $3B Sarah Friar: OpenAI CFO & $1T IPO Architect - Gene Dai. Now at OpenAI, she sits at the frontier of AI governance and scaling, bringing the financial discipline Apple's board favors
Why they are available. Currently engaged at OpenAI as CFO, but the CEO role at Apple is a massive step up that is rarely refused
Why it might not work. Lacks deep hardware engineering and global manufacturing supply chain experience, which are critical for the post-Cook era
—Adam Selipsky ruled outCEO of Helix Digital Infrastructure
Why they were ruled out. Recently launched and became CEO of Helix Digital Infrastructure, a $10B AI data center venture backed by KKR and Nvidia in mid-2026, making him unavailable for an external CEO role
—Shantanu Narayen ruled outExecutive Chair of Adobe
Why they were ruled out. His March 2026 announcement to transition from CEO to Executive Chair indicates a deliberate shift toward a less active operational role, making him unsuitable for the grueling Apple mandate

+2.2%Marianne Lake outside hireFormer CEO of Consumer & Community Banking, JPMorgan Chase−6% to +10%+$9.8B
Why they fit. Led JPMorgan's consumer division to a 32% return on equity in 2025, overseeing 86 million consumers and $76 billion in revenue. Her operational command of the largest U.S. deposit franchise is a perfect match for Bank of America's need to optimize its retail footprint and manage its rate-sensitive deposit base
Why they are available. Retired abruptly from JPMorgan Chase in June 2026 after being passed over for the co-presidency. She is immediately available and 'gettable' for a top chief executive role
Why it might not work. Bank of America's board historically favors internal successions, and they might resist an outsider implementing a 'JPMorgan playbook' that could disrupt the bank's internal culture. Furthermore, compensating her for forfeited unvested equity could be a sticking point
+0.9%Thasunda Brown Duckett outside hirePresident and CEO, TIAA−7% to +8%+$4.2B

Why they are available. Has served as CEO of TIAA since 2021. The opportunity to step up and lead a $448B G-SIB would be a rare, compelling career capstone that could realistically lure her away
Why it might not work. She may feel bound to complete her long-term strategic plans at TIAA. Additionally, moving from an asset manager back to the intensive regulatory scrutiny of a G-SIB might not appeal to her

Why they fit. As CFO of Citigroup for seven years, Mason led the financial restructuring and managed a massive reorganization of U.S. personal banking and technology builds. This experience maps directly to Bank of America's challenges with its large held-to-maturity (HTM) portfolio and its $14 billion annual technology mandate
Why they are available. Stepped down as Citigroup CFO in March 2026 to become Executive Vice Chair, explicitly signaling his intent to pursue a CEO role [806137, 79148099]
Why it might not work. While a highly regarded CFO, he lacks experience running a massive retail business line as the primary P&L owner, which could concern a board highly focused on BAC's consumer franchise
—Piyush Gupta not pricedChairman, Keppel Ltd and Former CEO, DBS Group
Why they fit. Transformed DBS into a leading digital bank, aggressively digitizing operations to drive the cost-to-income ratio down to 39.9% by 2024. He fits BAC's mandate to convert its enormous tech budget into measurable operating leverage
Why they are available. Retired from DBS in March 2025 and currently serves as a board chairman, meaning he has no non-compete barriers preventing him from taking a final major banking mandate
Why it might not work. Gupta's experience is overwhelmingly centered in Asia; he lacks recent connectivity with U.S. consumer banking regulators (Fed, OCC, FDIC) and deep familiarity with U.S. retail market nuances
—Daniel Simkowitz not pricedCo-President, Morgan Stanley
Why they fit. Oversees Institutional Securities and Investment Management at Morgan Stanley, providing the deep capital markets and strategic advisory depth necessary to manage Bank of America's global institutional and wealth reach
Why they are available. Was passed over for the Morgan Stanley CEO role in late 2023 in favor of Ted Pick, making him highly 'gettable' for a top job at a rival institution
Why it might not work. He lacks direct experience running a mass-market retail branch network and deposit engine, which is the foundational funding source for Bank of America
—Kelly Coffey not pricedFormer CEO, City National Bank
Why they fit. Led City National's integration with RBC and drove private banking growth, underpinned by a 30-year career at JPMorgan. She offers the G-SIB regulatory pedigree and wealth management background needed to drive BAC's high-net-worth segment
Why they are available. Stepped down as CEO of City National Bank in February 2025 to pursue new opportunities; currently unattached and available
Why it might not work. City National's scale (under $100B in assets) is a fraction of BAC's massive global balance sheet. The board may view the jump from a regional/private bank to a Tier 1 money-center bank as too steep
—Sarah Youngwood not pricedEVP & Chief Financial Officer, Nasdaq
Why they fit. Having led the 'AI playbook' at Nasdaq and previously served as CFO of JPMorgan's Consumer & Community Banking division, she uniquely bridges the gap between traditional consumer bank finance and modern fintech infrastructure
Why they are available. While actively employed at Nasdaq, a move to the CEO office of Bank of America would be the ultimate career promotion, making her highly receptive to an approach
Why it might not work. She has not yet held a chief executive title at a complex financial institution, and the BAC board may demand prior CEO experience to navigate 'fit and proper' regulatory standards
—Bill Demchak ruled outChairman and CEO, PNC Financial Services
Why they were ruled out. He is currently executing a massive long-term strategy to double the size of PNC to a $1 trillion institution, making his departure for a rival highly unlikely

Why they were ruled out. Just assumed her role at the Federal Reserve in August 2024/2026. A jump back to a commercial bank CEO role is politically and regulatorily impossible in the short term

Update August 13, 2026: Set against a related succession forecast [fc:b5cfad9f-73e0-43bb-8909-7314e82c3899], this estimate remains consistent, reflecting that for a highly profitable incumbent, external CEO transitions primarily introduce disruption risk unless the candidate addresses a specific strategic gap.
Baseline Context & Constraints: Bank of America is currently executing well under Brian Moynihan, trading near an all-time high of ~$64.10 with Q2 2026 results showing a 17.0% ROTCE—already hitting the medium-term targets set at its 2025 investor day BofA investor day spotlights co-presidents Athanasia, DeMare https://d1io3yog0oux5.cloudfront.net/_115fc026bfee716099bb924d2923dd51/bankofamerica/db/806/10579/earnings_release/The+Press+Release_2Q26_ADA.pdf Bank of America Corporation (BAC) Stock Price, News .... Because this baseline is robust and the forecast horizon is roughly one year, macroeconomic drivers like rates and credit will dominate the absolute stock price. The isolated causal effect of a sudden CEO replacement is therefore confined to modest multiple re-ratings, first-year integration costs, potential strategic restructuring charges, and the attrition of BAC's well-prepared internal bench, which includes co-presidents Jim DeMare and Dean Athanasia, and CFO Alastair Borthwick BofA appoints co-presidents as CEO says he will serve ... Bank of America sets up post-Moynihan succession race. An imposed transition must overcome the friction of losing incumbent talent before the market will fully capitalize new strategic benefits.
Marianne Lake (Highest Upside): Lake represents the strongest fit to drive a multiple premium, commanding the highest median (+$1.43) and right tail. Her extensive background as JPMorgan's CFO and CEO of Consumer & Community Banking directly targets BAC's acknowledged strategic gaps in credit card market share, digital innovation, and consumer/wealth net-new-money BofA investor day spotlights co-presidents Athanasia, DeMare Marianne Lake BofA CEO faces calls to boost returns, dealmaking as investors gather. Because she is highly familiar to investors and brings immediate CFO-grade discipline combined with large-scale retail operating experience, her appointment would quickly command a credibility premium. The primary constraints on her upside are the near-certain attrition of BAC's internal contenders and the risk of short-term expense resets or kitchen-sinking upon her arrival.
Other Named Outsiders (Duckett and Mason): Thasunda Brown Duckett commands a modestly positive median (+$0.60). She combines current CEO experience at TIAA with highly relevant history running Chase Consumer Banking, directly addressing BAC's consumer and deposit-franchise opportunities Thasunda Brown Duckett | White House Initiative on Historically ... BofA CEO faces calls to boost returns, dealmaking as investors gather. However, her lack of recent universal G-SIB and capital markets experience tempers the market reaction, leaving wider tails. Conversely, Mark Mason prices at a slight discount (median -$0.27). While he brings deep capital and regulatory fluency from his lengthy tenure as Citi's CFO He's Leaving Citigroup to Be a CEO. Can He Land the Big ... Citigroup Inc. press release dated November 20, 2025. - SEC.gov, his record is a finance-staff record rather than a P&L operating one. Furthermore, he is associated with Citigroup's consent-order-encumbered recent era, making it difficult for the market to underwrite a higher return trajectory for a bank already hitting 17% ROTCE.
Internal Promotion (DeMare) vs. Generic External: Promoting co-president Jim DeMare offers the smoothest transition and lowest variance. It resolves succession overhang instantly, but handing a consumer-heavy bank to a global markets executive invites risk-appetite scrutiny and risks alienating the leaders of the consumer and commercial segments investors want accelerated BofA appoints co-presidents as CEO says he will serve ... Bank of America sets up post-Moynihan succession race. This nets out to a near-zero median (+$0.13). Finally, a generic external veteran carries a slightly negative median (-$0.07) but the widest distribution of all branches. While a "new broom" could theoretically trigger a structural re-rating (driving the right tail), an imposed external hire at a well-capitalized, highly profitable mega-bank guarantees near-term integration costs, cultural friction, and likely restructuring charges before positive strategic shifts can be capitalized by August 2027.

Why they fit. Straubel proved his ability to scale industrial energy technology by leading Redwood Materials to produce 60,000 metric tons of critical minerals by 2025. This directly addresses Tesla's energy business growth mandate and battery supply chain needs while providing crucial cultural continuity as a Tesla co-founder
Why they are available. Realistically gettable; he re-joined Tesla's board of directors in 2023, signaling a renewed operational closeness to the company, and is widely viewed by analysts as the favorite internal-adjacent successor as of 2025
Why it might not work. The board might prefer an AI/software-native leader given Tesla's valuation rests on autonomy rather than just batteries; he might decline to leave the company he founded to return to Musk's shadow

Why they fit. As Apple's former COO, Williams architected the global supply chain and created the Apple Watch category (scaling it to a $15B+ business), proving he can take complex hardware prototypes and scale them into massive commercial successes. This matches Tesla's need for operational discipline to scale Optimus and mass-market EVs under a founder-driven brand
Why they are available. Highly available; he retired as Apple's COO on November 15, 2025, after 27 years, and was passed over for the CEO role when John Ternus was named Tim Cook's successor in April 2026 Apple and Best Buy just changed leadership. Her proven track record in transitioning autonomous vehicles from R&D to multi-city commercial deployment is the exact capability Tesla requires to monetize its FSD platform
Why they are available. She has served as Co-CEO since April 2021 Tekedra Mawakana - Wikipedia. While entrenched at Alphabet, the opportunity to transition from a Co-CEO of a subsidiary to the sole CEO of a $1.32T public company offers a clear and highly motivating upward career step
Why it might not work. She lacks hardware and automotive manufacturing expertise, which could cause friction with Tesla's legacy vehicle margins and factory operations. Non-compete or intellectual property clauses with Alphabet could delay an immediate start
—Robert Playter not pricedFormer Chief Executive Officer at Boston Dynamics
Why they fit. Playter successfully transitioned Boston Dynamics from an R&D lab to a commercial entity, culminating in the launch of the electric serial production-ready Atlas humanoid in January 2026 Boston Dynamics Unveils New Atlas Robot to Revolutionize Industry. This demonstrates the precise technical and commercial leadership required to transition Tesla's Optimus from demonstration to factory-ready production
Why they are available. High availability; he recently retired as CEO of Boston Dynamics in March 2026 after a 30-year career Peter Rawlinson (engineer) - Wikipedia). He is young enough to return for a legacy-defining CEO role in humanoid robotics
Why it might not work. He has publicly expressed a desire for personal time following the Hyundai acquisition and his retirement; the board might reject him for lacking automotive and energy grid scale experience
—Scott Strazik not pricedChief Executive Officer at GE Vernova
Why they fit. Strazik executed the structural separation of General Electric and led GE Vernova to a $176 billion backlog by August 2026, delivering $3.7 billion in free cash flow. His expertise in managing the energy transition and grid infrastructure maps directly to the growth mandate for Tesla's energy and Megapack businesses
Why they are available. Having completed the GE spin-off in April 2024 and stabilized GE Vernova through its critical growth phase in 2026, he has achieved his primary structural mandate and could realistically be recruited for a larger valuation challenge
Why it might not work. He has no background in consumer robotics, autonomous software, or passenger vehicles, which are central to Tesla's $1.32T valuation; he might decline in order to see through his long-term mandate at GEV

Why they are available. Highly available; he unexpectedly stepped down from his role at Ford in May 2026 following a corporate reorganization that dissolved the 'Model e' division Ford reshuffles EV unit, Doug Field out as Farley chases 8 ..., leaving him free for a new venture
Why it might not work. Having previously left Tesla to join Apple, Musk and the board may harbor reservations about his loyalty or cultural fit for a return as the chief executive
—Herbert Diess ruled outChairman of the Supervisory Board at Infineon Technologies AG
Why they were ruled out. At age 67 in 2026 and lacking recent operational involvement in AI and robotics, he represents a past era of automotive leadership rather than the AI-native vision Tesla's current valuation requires

Why they were ruled out. Contractually and publicly committed to a direct rival through 2026. Furthermore, her traditional auto background misaligns with Tesla's mandate which explicitly prioritizes robotics and AI over vehicle unit sales

This "best of both worlds" structure is why this is the only branch with a slightly positive median estimate (+$3), reflecting operational gains that outweigh the headline key-man risk.
The Mechanical Impact of a Full Musk Departure In the remaining branches, Musk departs all executive roles. This initiates several severe mechanical shocks: it voids the 2025 pay package's service pathway (freeing him to concentrate his AI ambition entirely within SpaceX/xAI), triggers the risk of an engineer exodus toward his other ventures SpaceX And Tesla 'Can't Talk About' A Merge In Earnings ..., and largely extinguishes the SpaceX-combination premium embedded in the stock. The offsets—avoiding the ~12% dilution, professionalizing capital allocation, and removing brand or political drag—are real but generally smaller than the multiple compression that occurs when marginal holders sell their Musk-AI option. Consequently, all full-exit branches carry deeply negative medians, differentiated by how well the successor can stabilize execution and re-underwrite the technology story.
Differentiating the External and Internal Successors JB Straubel (-$47 median) represents the least-damaging full exit. As a co-founder, 15-year CTO, and sitting board member JB Straubel, he provides the strongest cultural and technical continuity, minimizing talent flight and offering an authentic, Musk-blessed transition. Jeff Williams (-$56 median) offers the highest institutional comfort; his 27-year operational record at Apple Apple announces chief operating officer transition maps perfectly onto the complex Cybercab and Optimus manufacturing ramps, though he lacks the AI-visionary status required to maintain the current multiple. A generic external auto/tech CEO (-$77 median) and Aicha Evans (-$78 median) face the steepest drops. While Evans brings genuine robotaxi credibility from Zoox Aicha Evans: “You Must Have the Irrational Belief That It Will Work Out” Amazon's Zoox to launch paid robotaxi rides in Las Vegas ..., the scale gap from a ~2,000-person unit to a $100B+ revenue manufacturer introduces immense execution risk. Both Evans and a generic hire would struggle to independently underwrite a multi-trillion AI ambition without their own established founder persona Tesla without Musk? Board faces unique challenge whether he stays ....
Key Uncertainties and Skew The dollar differences in these estimates are wide and heavily left-skewed. This is primarily because the effect is multiplicative on an unknown August 2027 baseline price, which could plausibly sit anywhere between $180 and $700 depending on macroeconomic factors and autonomous milestones. Furthermore, if the market has already begun pricing out the "Musk premium"—as evidenced by SpaceX's mid-2026 post-IPO weakness SpaceX Stock Closes At Fresh Low After Seven Straight Days Of Losses and Tesla's own recent de-rating Tesla (TSLA) Q2 2026 earnings report - CNBC—the true penalty of a full exit may be shallower than historical commentary implies. Conversely, if autonomy visibly compounds by 2027, the dollar cost of losing Musk's leadership will hit the deeper negative extremes of our intervals.

Every option is priced against keeping Kelly Ortberg. The control is not a hire any board can make; it measures what knowing the specific person is worth, which here is +2.8% of share price.
Read the forecaster’s full reasoning for Boeing
Situation and Baseline Outlook Boeing is roughly 24 months into Kelly Ortberg’s turnaround, and current operating evidence is positive. The company recently reported Q2 2026 revenue of $24.6B, positive free cash flow of $0.6B, and a progressing 737 production ramp toward 47 aircraft per month [[PDF] Boeing Reports Second Quarter Results](https://s2.q4cdn.com/661678649/files/doc_financials/2026/q2/Press-Release.pdf) https://www.manufacturingdive.com/news/boeing-q2-earnings-2026-bca-bds-freecashflow/826382/ Boeing Reports Second Quarter Results. The FAA’s recent restoration of Boeing's authority to issue final airworthiness certificates for the 737 MAX and 787 signals a clear vote of confidence in the ongoing quality and culture rebuild https://www.aviationtoday.com/2026/07/23/boeing-regains-faa-certification-authority/ FAA certifies 737-7 - Boeing. Retaining Ortberg (the baseline) preserves current FAA and customer relationships, the ongoing rate ramp, and the critical certification cadence for the 777-9 and 737-10. Because each CEO replacement alternative is evaluated as an imposed intervention—not as a signal of hidden distress—the share price differences reflect the pure disruption costs of a mid-turnaround transition weighed against the specific incremental capabilities a successor brings.
The Transition Disruption Penalty Across all replacement scenarios, the expected near-term value impact is modestly negative to neutral. Removing a chief executive personally credited with rebuilding FAA trust within weeks of those milestones would create governance instability, marking Boeing’s fourth CEO in eight years. A new leader would likely invite a strategic reset, re-baselining the $10B free cash flow bridge and potentially taking new charges right through the 777-9 certification window. Furthermore, introducing new leadership during sensitive negotiations with the SPEEA engineering union, whose contract expires in October 2026, elevates strike risks that could directly stall peak production rates How Kelly Ortberg is rebuilding Boeing from the inside out - Fortune https://www.manufacturingdive.com/news/boeing-q2-earnings-2026-bca-bds-freecashflow/826382/. Consequently, all replacement branches center below or near the baseline, differing primarily in their offset potential and the width of their variance tails.
Internal vs. Generic External Hires Promoting Stephanie Pope offers the cleanest mechanical hand-off, as she leads Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) and manages the rate ramp day-to-day. However, elevating her vacates BCA leadership exactly as the unit finishes critical certifications, and the market would likely price in the loss of Ortberg’s outsider credibility premium. Seen as a caretaker pick associated with pre-Ortberg culture, her branch yields a median relative drop of roughly $8 per share. A generic veteran external aerospace hire averages over candidate quality but brings a steep 6-to-12 month learning curve regarding FAA relationships and fixed-price defense contracts. This alternative yields a slightly better median (-$6) and a wider right tail, reflecting the possibility of securing a strong operator capable of accelerating the supply-chain fix or crystallizing defense portfolio value.
Specific External Candidates * Patrick M. Shanahan: The strongest fit-and-availability profile. As a 30-year Boeing veteran, former CEO of critical supplier Spirit AeroSystems, and former acting Secretary of Defense, he is immediately credible with the FAA, the supply chain, and the Pentagon [[PDF] Boeing Reports Second Quarter Results](https://s2.q4cdn.com/661678649/files/doc_financials/2026/q2/Press-Release.pdf) Patrick Shanahan - Spirit AeroSystems. This minimizes friction, anchoring his median closest to the baseline (-$1). * Christopher Kubasik: The poorest expected fit, penalized with the lowest median (-$8.33). He brings a finance-first defense playbook lacking commercial aircraft or FAA certification experience, and his 2012 forced resignation from Lockheed Martin over an ethics investigation poses an active governance liability for a safety-focused culture Chris Kubasik DEF 14A https://www.manufacturingdive.com/news/boeing-q2-earnings-2026-bca-bds-freecashflow/826382/. * Tufan Erginbilgic: The highest-variance branch. His exceptional turnaround record at Rolls-Royce https://www.rolls-royce.com/~/media/Files/R/Rolls-Royce/documents/investors/rr-holdings-plc-2026-half-year-results-press-release.pdf drives the widest upside tail (+$35 at the 90th percentile). However, his aggressive margin playbook cuts directly against the FAA-supervised safety culture rebuild. His lack of US airframe and FAA experience settles his median essentially flat (+$0.33), with massive two-sided tails reflecting either a decisive margin reset or a severe regulator clash.

Kevin Mayer is the only replacement candidate with a neutral-to-flat median ($0.0). His causal fit for Disney's immediate strategic challenges is uniquely direct: he oversaw the original launch of Disney+, managed international DTC, and as Chief Strategy Officer executed the Pixar, Marvel, and Fox acquisitions Our Team. He requires virtually no onboarding for the streaming, M&A, and ESPN structural decisions that currently dominate Disney's equity story Disney turns $4-billion streaming loss into profit, and now it chases global .... While his recent stint at Candle Media has been underwhelming, his willingness to execute aggressive portfolio surgery provides the strongest structural unlock option among the candidates, reflected in a wide right tail (p90 at +$12.00).
External candidates carry heavier transition costs, lacking institutional memory of Disney's culture and its vital parks engine. Situation and Baseline Mechanics UnitedHealth is in a partial recovery under Stephen Hemsley, who provides vital stability and unmatched institutional knowledge. The baseline branch (retaining Hemsley, priced at $0 by construction) represents continuity of a working turnaround into 2027. Because this forecast evaluates imposed hypothetical decisions over a short 12-month horizon (August 2026 to August 2027), we do not infer hidden company problems or health issues from the fact of a CEO swap. Furthermore, the causal effect of any replacement is bounded: 2027 Medicare Advantage bids, commercial renewals, and operational AI investments are largely locked. A new CEO can primarily move guidance credibility, executive retention, and structural portfolio decisions.
The Friction of Replacement Any sudden replacement of Hemsley mid-turnaround carries a modestly negative median value impact (roughly -$0.33 to -$11.33 per share). The dominant mechanism is transition friction: a new CEO arriving in September 2026 is highly incentivized to rebase 2027 guidance downward at the December investor conference (a "kitchen-sink" effect) to establish a beatable performance bar. An abrupt change also risks triggering leadership departures at a time when Optum and UnitedHealthcare both need operational stability. Because overarching sector risks—such as Medicare-cost trends and ongoing DOJ investigations UnitedHealth Group responds to Department of Justice ...—remain common across all scenarios, the differences between candidates emerge entirely from how they navigate this transition drag and what strategic optionality they bring to the table.
Internal Continuity vs. Generic External Hires Promoting Tim Noel (median -$5.00) offers the lowest-friction internal continuity. As CEO of UnitedHealthcare, he already owns the benefit-design and repricing actions driving margin improvement UnitedHealth Group (UNH) earnings Q2 2026 - CNBC, which limits guidance-reset risks. However, elevating him creates a leadership gap at UHC mid-repricing and tests him as an unproven enterprise leader over a broader insurer/services conglomerate. A generic external hire (median -$5.67) presents a wider distribution. While an outsider provides governance independence, they face a steep learning curve integrating Optum and UHC, heightening the risk of near-term execution drag and cultural rejection at a famously insider-driven company.
Specific External Candidates: Palmer and Broussard Among the named externals, Eric Palmer (median -$3.67) offers an unusually strong functional fit with clean availability. As the former CEO of Evernorth and CFO of Cigna Eric Palmer | Board Member | LifeStance Health Inc., his deep specialty-pharmacy and health-services background directly addresses Optum's margin and PBM integration challenges Earnings Remarks. Because he cleanly exited Cigna, he avoids interim-role friction, producing a better median than a generic external. Conversely, Bruce Broussard (median -$11.33) is the weakest option. Despite tripling Humana's MA membership over a decade Humana Announces Leadership Transition Plan: Jim Rechtin ..., his legacy is tied to the exact Medicare Advantage aggressive-growth and risk-coding models that UNH is currently repairing UnitedHealth raises 2026 guidance again as cost controls pay off in Q2. Hiring the architect of those headwinds, while he is concurrently mid-assignment as HP's interim CEO Bruce D. Broussard - Wikipedia, creates the deepest left tail and lowest median of the group.
The High-Variance Heavyweight: Cordani David Cordani (median -$0.33) presents the most complex trade-off and the widest probability distribution. With a massive 17-year record transforming Cigna The Cigna Group Announces President & COO Brian ..., he offers unmatched credibility to manage a vertically integrated model and execute potential structural separations if political pressures force them. This strategic optionality gives him the highest upside tail of any candidate (p90 of +$43.00). However, the near-term costs are severely disruptive: he only became Cigna's executive chair in July 2026 David M. Cordani - The Cigna Group - Board of Directors - Person Details, meaning a jump to UNH's top seat would trigger immediate non-compete and trade-secret litigation. This legal distraction during the crucial 2027–2028 bid cycle pins his median near zero, balancing heavyweight capability against severe, near-certain transition friction.

Why they are available. Employed as CEO of DuPont since June 2024 Lori Koch, Chief Executive Officer - DuPont; she would have to be heavily incentivized to jump ship for a larger mandate
Why it might not work. Being relatively newly appointed as CEO of DuPont, she is entrenched and may decline to leave. 3M's board might also view her short tenure as a public company CEO as a potential risk

−4.2%Jim Fitterling outside hireExecutive Chair of Dow Inc. Dow Chair and CEO Jim Fitterling to Become Executive Chair; Karen S−18% to +5%−$4.0B
Why they fit. Fitterling successfully managed the post-2019 spin-off transition and reshaping of Dow into a materials science leader, returning $8.4 billion to shareholders Dow Chair and CEO Jim Fitterling to Become Executive Chair; Karen S .... As the current Lead Director of 3M, he has intimate knowledge of the company's internal redesign and is uniquely positioned to accelerate its multi-industrial reshaping and margin goals Board of Directors | Dow Investor Relations
Why they are available. Highly available following his transition from CEO to Executive Chair of Dow on July 1, 2026 Dow Chair and CEO Jim Fitterling to Become Executive Chair; Karen S
Why it might not work. He may prefer his less demanding board role at Dow over taking on a massive new turnaround and mass-tort liability challenge. The board may also prefer a completely external hire for a fresh perspective

—James (Jim) Lico not pricedOperating Advisor at Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Jim Lico — CD&R | Building Businesses Building Value
Why they fit. A master of the Danaher/Fortive business systems, Lico oversaw a complex separation and grew Fortive's market cap from $16B to $25B Jim Lico — CD&R | Building Businesses Building Value Jim Lico — CD&R | Building Businesses Building Value. His deep understanding of operational rigor is perfectly suited for instituting the '3M Excellence' operating discipline across a multi-industrial portfolio
Why they are available. Retired as Fortive CEO in July 2025 and currently serving as an advisor as of April 2026, making him highly available for a new major mandate Jim Lico — CD&R | Building Businesses Building Value Jim Lico — CD&R | Building Businesses Building Value
Why it might not work. He may be settled into his post-CEO advisory career and unwilling to take on a messy, high-pressure operational turnaround at this stage
—Russell Stokes not pricedSpecial Advisor, GE Aerospace (Retired President and CEO, Commercial Engines & Services)
Why they fit. A 29-year GE veteran known for operational transformations, Stokes managed massive, high-margin industrial portfolios. His background aligns flawlessly with 3M's mandate for operating discipline and the board's preference for 'Operational Transformer' archetypes
Why they are available. Retired as President and CEO of GE Aerospace's Commercial Engines & Services in July 2026, transitioning to a temporary Special Advisor role, making him eminently available
Why it might not work. He lacks prior public company enterprise CEO experience, which the 3M board might require for managing major liability overhangs and a complex restructuring
—Ram Krishnan not pricedExecutive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Emerson Electric
Why they fit. Krishnan led Emerson's portfolio pivot toward high-margin automation solutions, guiding 2026 segment EBITDA margins to 28%. His experience in large-scale, multi-industrial portfolio redesign fits 3M's objective to drive new-product growth and maintain top-tier margins
Why they are available. Has served as COO at Emerson since February 2021; ready for a step-up to a public CEO role but currently employed
Why it might not work. Emerson might promote him to CEO or offer a massive retention package. The 3M board may also prefer a sitting or former enterprise CEO over a COO for a turnaround of this magnitude
—Edward (Ed) D. Breen ruled outNon-Executive Chairman at DuPont DuPont Announces Leadership Transition
Why they were ruled out. His profile as a pure portfolio strategist clashes with 3M's focus on plant-level '3M Excellence' operating discipline. At 70+ years old, he is better suited to an advisory role than a hands-on operator
—Julie Sawyer Montgomery ruled outPresident and Chief Executive Officer Designate at Danaher Corporation Julie Sawyer Montgomery
Why they were ruled out. She is completely entrenched and unavailable due to her imminent succession to the CEO role at Danaher in October 2026
—Joakim Weidemanis ruled outCEO of Johnson Controls [jci202]
Why they were ruled out. His tenure as CEO at JCI is far too brief to consider him a realistic candidate to move in the coming weeks
Every option is priced against keeping Bill Brown. The control is not a hire any board can make; it measures what knowing the specific person is worth, which here is +1.6% of share price.
Read the forecaster’s full reasoning for 3M
3M is trading at or near all-time highs (roughly $183–$184), having risen nearly 69% since William Brown’s appointment was announced The 3M CEO's Success Is About Profit, Not Growth. The stock's premium multiple—around 20x forward EPS—rests heavily on Brown's personal credibility and his specific operating plan, which targets ~25% operating margins by 2027 and relies on a steady cadence of product launches 3M Reports Second-Quarter 2026 Results; Increases Full- ... 3M Provides Medium-Term Financial Outlook at 2025 Investor Day. The baseline branch (retaining Brown) is $0 by construction. Any exogenous replacement removes this specific operator premium and introduces transition drag, resetting the market's confidence in the 2027 targets. Consequently, every replacement alternative represents a net negative expected value on the median.
Despite the median disruption discount, all replacement branches carry a meaningful positive right tail driven by portfolio and liability optionality. 3M has long been viewed as a breakup candidate, and under our valuation convention, spun-off entities are counted at their combined value. A new CEO could accelerate portfolio separations, mirroring the value-creating industrial breakup wave seen at GE, Honeywell, and DuPont. Furthermore, any successor inherits the massive PFAS and product-liability overhang 3M: The Turnaround Is Real, But Already Priced In - Seeking Alpha https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/new-jerseys-25-billion-forever-chemicals-settlements-with-dupont-3m-others-win-2026-08-07/. A fresh executive who restructures these settlements or swiftly executes sum-of-the-parts divestitures could unlock significant upside, which is why the right tails across all external candidates extend into positive territory.
An internal promotion is the worst-received option (median -$9.67). 3M's current bench is perceived as thin, and the market explicitly rewarded Brown's arrival in 2024 because it brought much-needed outsider discipline to dismantle a legacy decentralized culture 3M Company Q2 2026 Earnings Call Summary - Yahoo Finance 3M hires outsider Bill Brown as CEO, shares jump - Reuters. Promoting an insider signals a potential reversion to old habits and the loss of a proven change agent. A generic veteran multi-industrial external hire (median -$5.83) fares better, replicating the successful 2024 formula of bringing in an outsider. This path revives credibility and breakup optionality, though it still suffers from the immediate disruption of losing an incumbent mid-turnaround.
Among the named candidates, Jim Fitterling offers the lowest onboarding risk because he is already 3M's Lead Independent Director Board of Directors 2026 Notice of Annual Meeting & Proxy Statement. However, his median impact remains quite negative (-$7.67) because his shareholder record at Dow has been weak amid a commodity-chemicals downturn, including a halved dividend in 2025 Dow - 7 Year Stock Price History https://stockanalysis.com/stocks/dow/. Investors would question his fit for an innovation-driven specialty compounder. Lori Koch (median -$5.50) presents a stronger fit for 3M's current mandate. As DuPont's CEO, she executed the Qnity electronics separation and has direct, highly relevant experience structuring PFAS settlements https://stockanalysis.com/stocks/dd/ DuPont Completes Separation of Qnity Electronics. While her factory-floor operating record is shorter than Brown's, her financial engineering and liability-resolution credentials offer a solid upside tail.
Darius Adamczyk represents the least negative median (-$3.00) and the widest positive right tail. His track record at Honeywell includes major portfolio surgery, notably the Garrett and Resideo spin-offs Honeywell Board of Directors Declares Spin-off Dividend of ..., and his current role in portfolio operations at Goldman Sachs reinforces his structural toolkit Darius Adamczyk Will join Goldman Sachs as a Partner and Co-head of .... His appointment would be heavily read as a strong signal that sum-of-the-parts value realization and structural breakups are imminent. While he still incurs a transition discount and faces historic criticisms over his Honeywell TSR and conglomerate structure Elliott Sends Letter to the Board of Directors of Honeywell ..., his specific brand among industrial investors provides the strongest catalyst for value-unlocking spinoffs, maximizing the probability of a positive outcome.
We plan to extend this to the S&P 100, and eventually to the whole market.
Methodology
I designed and iterated on the framing and series of forecasts run on each company, but the results are entirely generated by FutureSearch (plus the world model), so all the forecasts are fully public, and can be regenerated at any frequency.
It takes only three steps per company:
-
A multi-agent research pass to determine which outsiders an executive search committee would shortlist. It considers five angles at once: operators at peer companies, executives who are unusually available right now, people who have solved this company's specific problem elsewhere, the profile this particular board has historically hired, and unconventional candidates.
It biases towards availability but it isn't about feasibility or likelihood, just what would maximize shareholder value. Most people here have not actually been publicly considered for the role, so part of the value here is discovery. Some people that seem plausible are rejected for personal or regulatory reasons.
-
A categorical forecast to determine the best insiders from the company, by asking who (unconditionally) is most likely to hold the CEO title on June 30, 2027.
-
A decision forecast for each candidate against a baseline of the incumbent, in dollars per share, evaluated on August 31, 2027. The key here is that this is a causal question, asking what the impact would be if the board initiated the switch immediately. So it's not asking "in a world where this person is CEO, what would the stock price be?", which more gets at the correlation with the state of the company than the causal impact of this CEO.
The baseline forecast, keep the incumbent, has to return 0 here for this to be calibrated. So far it always does, but if it doesn't, then there's a reasoning issue in the forecast.
We also include an "unnamed veteran", as a control. A board can't hire a hypothetical person, but a forecast on the set of all other people gives a single measure of the quality of the incumbent CEO, as well as a measurement of how valuable it is to identify the right person. In theory, the board could decide to fire a CEO without a replacement in mind. And if this control is forecasted to have a higher share price than any individual candidate, it suggests the right candidate is not surfaced, which is another quality check.
Finally, our world model reconciles the forecasts against each other, to increase the consistent causal view of what it is about a company that leads to its share price.
I iterated on this sequence of forecasts, and the controls, until the results were stable across runs. There probably is an even better way to construct the forecasting model, but as is this already costs ~$7/company/run, so to refresh the S&P 500 each week would cost $14,000/month. High effort forecasts at this volume are much cheaper than having hundreds of financial professionals constantly betting, but still expensive.
In the table, each figure is the median of a distribution of outcomes. Expand each company to see the 80% confidence range for each candidate, from the 10th to the 90th percentile. The full forecast is linked, and the rationale for each candidate is shown inline, and you can also see them all at value ladders for all ten companies and who will be CEO in 2027.
If you want to run this yourself, the decision forecast case study walks through all three steps in code for a single company, with the prompts and the controls.
Let us know what you think of the quality of the resulting forecasts. If you disagree with any of the rankings, you can frame your own forecasts in FutureSearch and compare.
